The heart of roller skating is found in the skaters and at the head of this special grouping are the roller skating teachers. Individuals ranging from those who never wore a pair of roller skates to those who became world champions; individuals who were ice skaters, ballet and ballroom dancers; partners in life that shared in their passion. All of whom were committed to the adage:
"The Better You Skate The More Fun You Will Have"
The above has been accredited to Edward R. Smith, Editor of Skating Review Magazine, and first seen in the 1940 issues.
There were many - especially prior to the 1940's, rink owners - managers - operators who were also teachers. While many rinks were very small - causing for the owner (s) to wear all the hats of responsibility, the truth behind operators who also taught, was their passion for skating and the basis for the above slogan.
These pages are a biographic-oriented resource that includes correct names, dates and locations (rinks). Photos are important as well. Any details on any teacher are also welcome.
Also, George Pickard's "Titans and Heroes of American Roller Skating" is available for purchase at the Museum of Roller Skating. http://www.rollerskatingmuseum.com (click on this link or paste into a browser) If you are not a member of the Museum it is well worth the minimal cost to join. Just having access to all of the Skating magazines (digitally) is a tremendous value.
This directory is a very beginning alphabetical listing of roller skating teachers and will always be a "work in progress".
Biographical information / details will be added / expanded as available, and profiled once there is enough information to warrant. Most certainly confirmation and / or clarity as to any individuals that taught and / or managed is welcome.
***We are especially looking for the teacher (s) of teacher (s), going back as far as possible, even if the teacher is an ice skating teacher, or a ballet teacher or whom / where a teacher has found motivation (and sometimes training) to become a teacher of roller skating. The teacher can also be from speed or polo / hockey.
