Some fun thoughts on the history of the name and dance
The Name
from www.ohbabynames.com/meaning/name/killian/1937
-Killian is the anglicized form of the Irish masculine name Cillian from the Gaelic “cill” meaning “church, monastery” paired with the diminutive “an” and so means “little church” or “associated with the church”.
-Alternately, Cillian is sometimes considered a diminutive of the Irish-Gaelic “ceallach” meaning “conflict, strife, war” and would therefore be given the etymology “little war”.
-While preaching the gospel to the Duke, Saint Kilian (as he’s known in Germany) informed the lord that his marriage to his brother’s widow went against scripture. When the wife of the Duke heard how the bishop spoke critically of her marriage, she had Saint Kilian and two of his fellow missionaries beheaded in the town square in Würzburg as they preached to the people. The relics of these three martyrs (i.e., their skulls) have been preserved to this day and are paraded through the streets on Kilian’s feast day (July 8).
-The traditional Irish spelling of Cillian is still quite popular in both Ireland and Northern Ireland, but the Irish also use Killian with a “K”. Kilian with one “L” is used with some frequency in Austria and France today, but Killian with two “L”s is preferred among English speakers.
The Skate Dance
Wikipedia The Kilian was invented by Karl Schreiter and was first performed in Vienna at Engelmann Ice Rink in 1909.
Though there is no obvious link to the "Kilian", in an undocumented fairy tale, "Lieutenant Killian Jones is charged with escorting Princess Emma to her betrothed ... 'May I have the honor of the next dance, your Highness?' ... soon as he did, he was amazed how right it felt to have Princess Emma in his arms. ...."
The Kilian (A) position is also one of the basic skating positions that figure skating partners use in ice dancing, roller dancing and pair skating. The man holds the lady's left hand with his left hand while standing slightly behind and left to the lady. He puts his right hand on the right side of the lady's waist. She places and holds her right hand on and around the man's right hand while bending her arm in a triangle. (see dance positions)
Some skaters have dubbed this dance "the killer" because of only two steps out of the 14, are 2 beats long and all the rest are only 1 beat long, giving them very little 'rest'.
